Automation of Legal Document Discovery

Lay summary

Realising breakthroughs in terms of the efficiency of legal-discovery, based on developing robust, production-grade, enterprise-ready machine intelligence solutions that support subject matter experts in their tasks.

Abstract

Insurance companies and law firms process many complex cases, which often involve time-consuming research work. These cases require time-consuming manual processing and analysis. The processing of complex case dossiers, which can comprise several thousand pages, generates high expenses for the parties involved.

Together with the insur-tech start-up legal-i, researchers at BFH have contributed to the development of a production-ready machine-intelligence software solution. By using adaptive machine learning approaches, they succeeded in creating an intelligent system capable of analyzing complex legal and medical issues. The basis of the development is the close collaboration between researchers at BFH and the Bern-based start-up. The developed solution has been rolled out, and is in production at two of the largest insurance providers of the world, and at Switzerland's largest law firms.
