Mountain Hydrology and Mass Movements

The Research Unit Mountain Hydrology and Mass Movements studies hydrological, glaciological, and natural hazard processes in predominantly mountainous, glacierised, and partially forested regions. It investigates the formation and propagation of flood flows, bedload transport, landslides, and debris flows, the occurrence of hydrological droughts, as well as glacier dynamics, their impact on water resources and landscape evolution. The research unit conducts experiments and long-term measurements that form the basis for the development of numerical models, new sensors and hazard assessment methods. Researchers assess damage and damage processes of frequent to rare, extreme natural events, as well as glacier changes and their impacts on water resource and ecosystems at a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. The data collected are used for risk-based, sustainable management of natural hazards and water resources.
